The Temple Lodge

Lodge No. 4962

The Temple Lodge is proud to have members of all ages, religions and backgrounds with some members having enjoyed over 50 years with our prestigious lodge.

We are a warm and friendly bunch that meet six Saturdays a year for masonic meetings, in addition to instructional meetings on Wednesday evenings, and other social events. Although, based in the Brighton and Hove area we have members from surrounding areas including Worthing, Horsham, and London.

Based in Brighton within the province of Sussex, we meet at the Brighton Masonic Centre on Queens Road in Brighton which is a magnificent building steeped in history. With multiple temples, dining rooms and a bar with social area it is a perfect venue.

The main “temple” is a beautiful room which, after completion of the centre in 1928, our lodge held the first meeting. Owing to our affiliation with the centre since its creation we take a “Guardianship” over the main temple and ensure that it is cared for.

Our members value that we meet on Saturday evenings, contrary to a lot of lodges who meet during the week. Weekly meetings can be difficult with work and personal commitments, and weekend meetings help us to fit our meetings around our modern lives.

We subscribe whole heartedly that Freemasonry is to be enjoyed and that it should therefore precidence over our personal and work obligations. We actively encourage our members to follow the hierarchy of importance:

  1. Personal & family life
  2. Work and professional matters
  3. Masonry

We always love to see all our fellow members regularly, but in life people have lots of other commitments and as such there is no requirement to attend all meetings.

Our History

Temple Lodge was formed in 1927 by several Freemasons based in Brighton who found themselves regularly commuting for work to London and surrounding areas. Instead of spending long evenings in London to participate in Freemasonry they decided to setup a local Lodge that would allow them to spend more time in their hometown.

Their intention was to hold meetings at the planned Brighton Masonic Centre in the new Temple. As this centre was not completed until 1928, they held four meetings in the Royal Palace of the Prince Regent (King George IV) until it was ready.

Since then, the lodge has been thriving for almost one hundred years, with our “centenary” fast approaching in 2027 where we hope to hold our centenary meeting at the Royal Palace to mark the first meeting of the lodge. To further mark the occasion we hope to use King George IV’s masonic apron during the ceremony which is normally displayed within the Brighton Masonic Centre.

When do we Meet?

We meet every 4th Saturday evening in September, November, January, February, March, and April. These meetings start late afternoon and finish in the early evening, leading onto a “Festive Board” which is a three-course meal where we socialise.

Ordinarily we also run two to three instructional meetings on Wednesday evenings leading up to the main meetings. Durings these evenings we learn about Freemasonry, and catchup socially.

Outside of our regular meetings we also organise social events such as meals and charity events which include family and friends.

Subscriptions

Our yearly subscriptions are due each year on the 1st September. Subscriptions for 2023/24 are £165 for the year.

This covers the UGLE (United Grand Lodge of England) administrative costs, hire of the Masonic Centre for the meetings, and other miscellaneous lodge costs.
